If technology rocks, Amadubi, some 50km off Jamshedpur, is the new star.
With a little help from Google Maps and American travel website TripAdvisor, caretaker villagers of this rural getaway have been doing brisk business for the past six months, wooing tourists not just from Jharkhand but also neighbouring states like Bengal.
According to the Rusika Sangeko register, the resort, which saw a steady stream of over 350 visitors since September last year, had been pre-booked till February.
Limited resources notwithstanding, the Village Tourism Development Committee has managed to garner success in the hospitality sector by organising cultural programmes and sightseeing tours to the Dalbhumgarh airstrip, Narsinghgarh Fort, Rankini Mandir, Dasbhuj Mandir, Kotwal temple and Saal forests.
"Maximum tourists came from Calcutta. In the past six months, the total revenue generated has crossed Rs 2 lakh, which was divided among committee members, cooks, dancers and pyatkar artists who beautify the resort," said member Kamalkanta Gope.
Ram Sarangi, a student of XLRI who too visited Amadubi last year, called it an enriching experience far from the madding city crowd. "The hospitality was on a par with any star resort and the quality of food finger-licking good. Our stay received a rustic charm, courtesy folk performances in the evenings. Amadubi needs a stronger publicity team though and we suggested the same to the village committee," he said.
The resort had been officially inaugurated in September 2013 and had suffered initial hiccups like low footfall. So, what has turned around the fortune of Rusika Sangeko, the abode of pyatkar artists? "Inclusion on Google Maps and TripAdvisor," said Gope.
"We are no big businessmen, but we have been successful in bringing tourists here through our hospitality. The first few months, without a boundary wall and electricity, was difficult but gradually awareness increased since last July-August. From September, we have been very busy welcoming guests. The online platform of promoting Rusika Sangeko has proved to be a boon because everybody surfs the Internet," said Gope.
Treasurer Kanto Manki said business was stable now. "The tariff is Rs 2,000 per cottage and extra charges for food. While a vegetarian meal costs Rs 450, a non-vegetarian is available for Rs 530," he said.
Sujit Das, project co-ordinator of Amadubi rural tourism, said the summer was likely to see limited footfall because of the blazing sun. "Therefore, we are planning to offer special discounts to woo tourists."
