Ranchi, March 25: MLAs, cutting across party lines, today asked the government to conduct a fresh survey of below poverty line (BPL) families as earlier counts had left out a large number of eligible people who ended up losing out on the benefits due to the poor.
Raising the matter in the Assembly today, Daltonganj MLA Alok Kumar Chourasia said even after three BPL surveys in 2002, 2007 and 2011, thousands of eligible families had been left out.
The MLA demanded action against government officers for having conducted faulty surveys and sought a fresh exercise to undo the wrongs.
"BPL people are socio-economically marginalised and their voice is not heard by local and state administrations. Since their names have been deleted from the BPL list they can't avail of subsidised food grains, medical facilities and other government-run schemes meant for them," he said.
Replying for the government, parliamentary affairs and food and civil supplies minister Saryu Roy said that whenever the state government received complaints of an eligible family or people, action had been taken to include them in the BPL list.
