A teenager and a young homemaker were killed at their homes in Namkum amid Holi celebrations in the state capital on Thursday.

Pintu Mahto (18) was fatally assaulted around 7.30pm at his Nachaldag residence, some 30km from the district headquarters. Five youths barged in, tied his hands and slit his neck with a sharp weapon.

Father Gambhir Mahto, a farmer who was in an outhouse barely 40ft away, helplessly heard Pintu’s screams. The gang had locked him up before attacking the teen.

An FIR has been registered based on Mahto’s statement.

Namkum OC Rajdeo Singh confirmed the attack and said one Bajrang Mahto, a resident of the village, had been named in the FIR. “Investigations are on. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of old enmity,” he added. No one has been arrested so far.

In the other incident, 24-year-old Madhuri Devi was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws at Lohadih, 5km from the district headquarters, on Thursday evening.

She later died at RIMS. An FIR has been registered on the basis of her dying declaration.
