Bokaro, Feb. 16: Two persons were arrested today for the attack on Leader of Opposition and Congress member Rajendra Singh’s residence in Bermo yesterday after an FIR was filed against JMM’s Dumri MLA Jagannath Mahto and six others.

Singh’s younger son Kumar Gaurav, who was at the house along with his mother Rani at the time of the incident, filed the FIR after which police swung into action and nabbed Teglal Mahto and Jitlal Mahto. Search is on for the others accused.

Around 300 supporters of Mahto barged into the senior Congress leader’s residence last afternoon, pelting stones at windowpanes and verbally abusing his wife and son. The hooliganism, which lasted for 20 minutes, reportedly occurred in full view of six policemen who did nothing.

The youths — armed with swords, spears, bows, arrows and pebbles — were part of the 20,000-odd crowd who had congregated just 300m away for a rally called by Mahto. Singh was away in New Delhi for a meeting.

Meanwhile, Gandeya Congress MLA Sarfarj Ahmad and former legislators O.P. Lala and Binod Singh, who started a dharna with around 2,000 supporters in front of the Bermo police station from 9am today, lifted the agitation after over four hours following assurances from Bermo SDO B.N. Choubey and DSP S.K. Pathak that all the guilty, including Mahto, would be arrested in two days.
