Ranchi, May 30: Registration of businesses for a nationwide goods and services tax that will roll out from July 1 will begin again for a fortnight beginning June 1.
Commercial tax department secretary K.K. Khandelwal told the media today that out of 90,000 businesses, as many as 57,000 had already registered while enrolments were conducted for about eight months and stopped on May 1.
"July 1 to July 15 will be the last opportunity for GST registration for the remaining businesses of the state. Businesses that don't will have to face problems after that," he told newspersons at Suchana Bhawan.
Explaining the difficulties for business in case they did not opt for GST registration, Khandelwal said such businesses would not be able to benefit from the advantages of GST.
"Once a dealer has got himself registered with GST, his entire business becomes transparent and he will start getting benefit of input tax credit (ITC). ITC is the credit a manufacturer receives for paying input taxes towards materials used in the manufacture of products. In case there is no GST, he will not get this benefit," he said, adding that other registered businesses would also not like to deal with those who weren't GST compliant.
Khandelwal said details about GST were being given out to businessmen via training camps. "So far in May, we organised 150 training programmes, and in June, we plan to hold 170 programmes to make people aware about GST," he said.
"GST will end the interface of commercial tax department officials with dealers as the entire exercise of filing returns will be done online," he said.
Khandelwal also announced two helplines, 0651-6600500 and 0651-24000939, set up by his department to help businessmen with their queries.
In March, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley said that GST would create one of the world's biggest single markets, make commodities cheaper and make tax evasion difficult.
