Had there been an automatic railway crossing where the barricade was controlled by a sensor attached to the tracks and would get activated through vibration of a moving train, there would have been less accidents.

This unique suggestion was presented through a model by Rinki Kumari, a Class X student of Girls' High School Railway Colony-Bhaga, at the district-level science exhibition held under the Union government's Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) award scheme in Dhanbad.

There are 1,035 such models, made by students of 725 government schools across Dhanbad, on display at the two-day science exhibition, which was inaugurated by deputy commissioner Kripa Nand Jha at Golf Ground on Thursday.

The participants mainly projected issues related to energy, environment, health and hygiene.

Nusrat Parveen and Mamta Kumari, also Class X students of Girls' High School Railway Colony, tried to show transformation of solar energy into electrical energy through their model.

According to them, this system is more cost effective than the solar panels.

"We used a cone-shaped structure to trap sun rays on our terrace. The steam generated through evaporation of water helps move a turbine in another chamber, which generates electrical energy," said one of the girls.

Mamata said she got the idea from a show on Discovery Channel.

"I discussed it with my science teacher K.K. Pandey, who helped me develop the model with valuable inputs," said the Class X student.

There were many from underprivileged families whose talents proved that if given opportunities, they could excel in life.

Class VIII student of a middle school in Kusmatand, Rohit Modak, projected his dream of a green school campus. The son of daily wage labourer said that pollution could be effectively controlled by planting adequate number of plants to balance deforestation in urban areas.

The model of Ekrar Ansari, son of a cart-puller, explained the formation of clouds and precipitation.

"I want to become a scientist and ensure development of India by finding solutions to problems like energy and water crisis," said the Class VII student of KK Middle School, Rangamati.

Out of the 1,035 models, 78 will be selected for the state-level exhibition by a panel of judges comprising scientists from Indian School of Mines, Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research and teachers of colleges under VBU on Friday.

The parameters on which the models will be judged are project record and explanation provided by the participants.

The state-level exhibition will be held in Ranchi on November 3 and 4.

Deputy development commissioner Ashok Kumar Singh, additional district magistrate Anil Kumar Singh, district education officer Dharmardeo Rai and deputy superintendent of education Banke Bihari Singh were also present at the inauguration.
