Delhi police on Tuesday registered a case against the realtor son of a former Bahujan Samaj Party MP for waving a gun at a woman and threatening her after she objected to him entering a ladies’ washroom at a five-star hotel in the capital.

A video of the early Sunday morning incident that has gone viral on social media shows Ashish Pandey abusing the woman and shouting expletives outside Hyatt Regency while some of his friends laugh and try to intimidate her.

Junior home minister Kiren Rijiju said Delhi police had registered an FIR against Ashish under the Arms Act and the Indian Penal Code. “Strong and appropriate action will be taken. Also verifying the identity of others,” the minister said in a tweet.

Ashish is from Lucknow and his father, Rakesh Pandey, was a former BSP Lok Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh. His brother, Ritesh Pandey, is a sitting party MLA.

The BSP has distanced itself from the 3.40am incident, saying Ashish was neither a party leader nor a member.

Sources said Ashish, apparently a regular at the hotel, went berserk at the entrance after a party early on Sunday. The 90-second video, shot on a mobile, shows Ashish waving a revolver and threatening the woman, provoking outrage at what is being seen as a brazen instance of a VIP kin riding roughshod over others.

“The man was brandishing a gun and hurling abuse at me and threatening me. I was very scared. The hotel staff tried to intervene but they were looking scared too,” the woman told a news channel.

Police sources said hotel staff told them the realtor went to his car and took the revolver but added there was no clarity on the sequence. The sources said they were also investigating if Ashish had carried the gun inside the hotel.

The clip shows his women friends and some hotel staff trying to calm him down and escorting him back to his car. After sitting in his car for a while, Ashish starts abusing the woman again.

The hotel lodged a police complaint after the video went viral. “The safety and security of our guests is our primary concern. We take the incident seriously and have been working with the local police authorities on the same,” it said in a statement.

Devender Arya, deputy commissioner of police, said: “We have received a complaint from the hotel authorities regarding the incident that occurred on the intervening night of October 13-14…. Legal action is being taken as per law.”

Sources said a lookout circular had been issued against Ashish and the police were checking if he had a gun

licence.

“Raids are on to arrest him and identify his friends who had accompanied him to the hotel,” a police officer said.
