March 13: Sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan died tonight in Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital. He was suffering from cancer of the lungs.

The 76-year-old maestro leaves behind his wife and two sons, Sujat and Hidayat.

His body will be brought to Calcutta on Sunday to be buried next to his father Ustad Enayat Khan’s grave.

A few months ago, Vilayat came to Calcutta and even performed a couple of times. In February, doctors suspected cancer and he was taken to Mumbai for treatment.
