Calcutta, March 22 :     The Calcutta Municipal Corporation?s property, including computers, valued at over Rs 10 lakh, was damaged and civic engineers were beaten as nearly 150 Trinamul Congress supporters went on a rampage at the borough-II office at Hatibagan today. The activists, led by Ward 33 councillor Pabitra Biswas, were protesting the alleged misutilisation of land funds and the poor maintenance of street lighting. Bomkesh Banerjee, the borough?s executive engineer, and Tapan Bhadra, assistant engineer (lighting), who were rushed to the Calcutta Medical College Hospital after the attack, were later released. Even though the corporation has filed an FIR against the councillor at Battala police station, no arrest was made till the evening. Mayor Prasanta Chatterjee condemned the incident as ?barbaric?. Durga Mukherjee, Trinamul leader in the corporation, said tonight: ?I am not aware of any such incident...it is not possible for me to comment.? The corporation?s engineering allied services association has given a call to stop all civic work in the Narkeldanga-Beliaghata area under Ward 33.
