Hyderabad, Oct. 3: A teenager apparently frustrated with the delay over Telangana burnt herself alive while her parents were out shopping for Dussehra yesterday.

Written with charcoal on the wall of the room where 18-year-old D. Bhavani allegedly ended her life were the words: “I feel sad that the Telangana state is still a far cry”.

Revelations about the death of the Class XI student came in the middle of a three-week-long general strike in the Telangana region, including Hyderabad, that prompted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to promise a “solution” today.

Another student, Ravinder from Medak district, who had burnt himself, died on Saturday. A day earlier, a miner committed suicide.

Bhavani shut herself in a room after her parents went to the market, doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze around 9.30am on Sunday.

She died on the spot, said B. Bhasker, the inspector in charge of Koheda, the village 65km from Hyderabad where Bhavani’s family lives.

Telangana agitators led by a former Telugu Desam legislator, Janardhan Reddy, blocked the Koheda-Vijayawada highway to protest the death.

Pro-Telangana groups have claimed that over 600 people, mostly students, have ended their lives since November 2009 when the agitation started.
