The managing director of Muthoot Finance suffered injuries in stone pelting on his car in Kerala’s Kochi on Tuesday, at a time the company has retrenched many employees and had been in the throes of a strike.
George Alexander Muthoot, 64, who suffered head injuries, has been admitted to a private hospital, police said. Sources said one person had been detained.
The Kerala-headquartered Muthoot Finance is the largest gold-financing company in India.
A section of employees has been agitating against the Muthoot management over the dismissal of 160 staffers from the company’s 43 branches across the state in December.
The protest is being held under the leadership of CPM trade union Citu.
The Muthoot management alleged that “Citu goons” were behind the attack that occurred around 9am in front of the IG’s office in Kochi. Union leaders denied the allegation and said Citu had no role in it.
