Calcutta, March 10 :    Calcutta, March 10:  Uproar marked the opening day of the budget session in the West Bengal Assembly today, as the Opposition blasted the Jyoti Basu government over the appointment of Surabhi Banerjee as Calcutta University pro-vice-chancellor (academic). The slogan-shouting brigade interrupted Governor A.R. Kidwai?s address and sought an explanation for what they called ?blatant political appointment?. They claimed the government had rewarded Banerjee with the post as she was the chief minister?s authorised biographer. An unfazed Governor, however, managed to complete his speech in which he cited the government?s achievements, especially that in maintaining peace and communal harmony. ?My government is aware of its responsibilities in ensuring timely intervention by the police and effective prosecution of offenders. Special attention is being given to tackle the problems of railway and highway crimes,? he said. Congress and Trinamul Congress legislators were on their feet as soon as Kidwai began his speech. They tore up business papers and copies of the Governor?s speech, shouting at the top of their voices. Samar Mukherjee, Goutam Chakraborty thumped desks as others hurled charges against the treasury bench. ?Who is she? Why has she been favoured with the post? We want an inquiry into the appointment,? they cried. Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay of the Trinamul held up a poster against politicisation of the state?s education system. Tapas Mukherjee, Ram Janam Majhi, Ashoke Deb and Sudhir Bhattacharya rushed to the podium to interrupt Kidwai, but they were stopped by party chief whip Abdul Mannan and Saugata Roy. Basu sat unruffled, listening to Kidwai. Taking a cue from him, other treasury bench members also kept their cool. The chief minister refused to comment on the matter even outside the House. Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim, however, ticked off the Opposition for its unruly behaviour. ?But I must say they have shown some sense of responsibility ? unlike last year ? by allowing the Governor to finish his speech,? he said. Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad activists entered Calcutta University?s main administrative building and burnt effigies of Banerjee and Basu. They dispersed after submitting a memorandum against Banerjee?s appointment to vice-chancellor R.N. Basu.
