The Supreme Court on Wednesday took note of the October 3 violence at Puri's Jagannath temple during a protest against the introduction of a queue system for devotees and said no policeman should enter the temple with weapons and shoes.

Amidst protest from servitors and devotees, the Jagannath temple management in Puri had decided to introduce queue system once a week from October 1 for devotees.

Under the queue system, devotees had to enter the temple through the Singhadwar and leave through the three other gates.

On October 3, Puri turned into a battlefield after servitors of the Jagannath temple, members of the voluntary outfit Jagannath Sena and local people fought police for nearly six hours during a daylong bandh called to protest the queue system.

Nearly 35 people, including 12 cops, were injured in the clash.

The violence had its desired effect, with the administration agreeing to allow residents to enter the temple using any gate. But they have to carry identity cards to enter the premises.

The queue system was introduced on an experimental basis and a review would be done as locals and servitors opposed it, a temple official had said.
