New Delhi, Nov. 24: A Samajwadi Party MP tore up papers and hurled them at the Speaker's chair during an Opposition protest in the Lok Sabha today over the government's demonetisation drive, prompting Sumitra Mahajan to warn the member.
"This conduct of Shri Akshay Yadav is in gross violation of the norms of standards and etiquettes laid down under the rules and conventions of the House... I, therefore, while expressing grave displeasure over the conduct of Shri Akshay Yadav, warn him to refrain from such disorderly acts in the future," the Speaker said.
The incident occurred during Question Hour when Akshay, 30, MP from Ferozabad in Uttar Pradesh, was among the Opposition members raising slogans against the demonetisation move in the well of the House. Immediately after Mahajan adjourned the House because of the protest, Akshay tore up the papers in his hand and flung them at the Speaker's podium. The papers did not hit the Speaker but the young MP's conduct led to uproar from the treasury benches.
Opposition members from the Congress, Trinamul, the Samajwadi, RJD, AIADMK and the Left have been blocking House proceedings demanding a discussion over demonetisation under an adjournment motion in the presence of the Prime Minister.
Several Opposition members have moved adjournment motions but they have been disallowed by the Speaker. Members have even displayed placards in the well, which is not permitted.
