A bunch of thieves stole a bag containing gold jewellery and vada-pavs because of the vada-pavs.

Police have recovered the bag from a rat hole, with the vada-pavs polished off but the gold left intact.

Sundari Planibel, a resident of Dindoshi, had approached police on Monday saying she had lost ten tolas of gold jewellery, an officer said.

Planibel, who works as a domestic help, said her employer had given her a couple of vada-pavs when she left for home on Monday evening.

She had some jewellery at home which she wanted to deposit in a bank. On reaching home, she picked up the jewellery, put it in the polythene bag in which she was carrying the vada-pavs, and left.

On the way, she gave away the bag of vada-pavs — forgetting it also had the jewellery — to two boys. On reaching the bank, she realised her mistake. Frantic, she approached the police, who tracked the two boys down. But the boys said they had dumped the bag in a garbage vat as the

vada-pavs looked stale.

Footage from CCTV showed that after the boys dumped the bag, it began to move mysteriously and disappeared. On Tuesday, the police scoured the holes in a nearby gutter and found the bag and the jewellery.
