An analysis of election affidavits of India’s chief ministers shows that Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee is the poorest, with a little over Rs 15 lakh in assets, and Andhra Pradesh’s Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is the richest, with more than Rs 510 crore.

According to the analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), Telangana’s K. Chandrashekar Rao has the highest debt among the chief ministers. Rao has assets of around Rs 23.6 crore and a debt of almost Rs 8.9 crore.

Mamata is the only chief minister whose assets are less than Rs 1 crore.

Reddy, a mining baron, is followed by Arunachal Pradesh’s Pema Khandu, and Odisha’s Naveen Patnaik in wealth. Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan and Haryana’s Manohar Lal Khattar rank just above Mamata.

Karnataka’s Basavaraj Bommai and Maharashtra’s Eknath Shinde follow Rao in the quantum of debt.

The ADR also reported that 43 per cent of chief ministers face serious charges that include non-bailable sections of the law.
