Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday extended “full support” to Rahul Gandhi’s statement on the grim state of the Indian economy, adding that “everybody needs to come together to take a stand” at a non-BJP rally she would convene on January 19.

“Rahul has said ‘it (the rupee) is not breaking – it’s broken. I extend full support to his statement,” Mamata said, before stating that the Congress chief was welcome to attend the College Square Puja on Mahashtami. Although it is an initiative by the Congress state president Somen Mitra, Mamata said Rahul’s visit was “personal”.

Responding to questions on Mayawati’s refusal to tie up with the Congress for the Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, Mamata said what the BSP chief does is her prerogative but both Mayawati and the Congress are welcome to her rally.

“The CPM does such a lot against me, every day, here. But I will invite them too. I have already invited their Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. I don’t know if he will come…. The CPI, RSP, the Forward Bloc, we will invite them too,” she said.

Mamata said she had also invited Sonia Gandhi and Rahul, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and DMK chief M.K. Stalin.

She said Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah have already confirmed their participation.

“Everybody needs to come together to take a stand,” Mamata told a news conference on Friday evening after chairing a core committee meeting of her party at Trinamul Bhavan.

Mamata said the publicity campaign committee, under transport minister Suvendu Adhikari and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, for her January 19 rally on the Brigade Parade Ground was entrusted with the responsibility of making the event a grand success.

She instructed the Trinamul leadership to be on high alert during the Pujas. She said the state was ready to combat the “sinister designs”, politically and administratively.

“The BJP’s tactics will not work here…. I appeal to the people to deny the BJP even a single seat in Bengal,” she added.

At the meeting, Mamata formed several committees -- most have Adhikari and Abhishek – to streamline the leadership in some districts, drive the campaign for the January 19 rally and initiate preparations for the Lok Sabha polls.
