Mumbai, March 5 :     The Shiv Sena-BJP government today moved quickly to transfer police officials responsible for the security of former mayor Milind Vaidya after he was injured in a daylight shootout yesterday, allegedly by members of the Chhota Shakeel gang affiliated to Dawood Ibrahim. The police today detained two persons to identify the former Sena mayor's assailants. Assistant commissioner of police Pradeep Sawant said 25 empty cartridges were recovered, indicating AK-47 rifles were used. Vaidya, who survived a similar bid on his life last December, identified two of his assailants after police experts put together sketches of suspects from eye-witness descriptions. Three were killed in the shoot-out. Vaidya escaped with a bullet injury in his stomach. Deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde said police had identified the assailants who 'would be arrested within two days'. He said he had transferred deputy commissioner of police Ashok Dongre, in charge of Mahim, where Vaidya was shot at outside his own house. Munde, who also holds the home portfolio, suspended Vaidya's bodyguard and the senior police inspector of Mahim police station as well. Police sources said the murder attempt was possibly triggered by Vaidya's involvement in the demolition of an unauthorised structure in Mahim. They also said the attempt was perhaps a reprisal for the gunning-down of city builder Majid Khan last week by the Chhota Rajan gang. Though Vaidya was not connected to Rajan, he may have earned Shakeel's wrath over some land dispute.
