Shillong, May 18: Wansuk Myrthong today scripted history as she looked down on creation from the highest peak in the world.
Wansuk, 30, a Meghalaya police constable, became the first woman from the state to scale Mt Everest.
An armed constable in the 1st Meghalaya Police Battalion, Wansuk was atop Mt Everest around 8.30am.
She is the second individual from the state to have scaled Mt Everest — at 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level — the first being Gary Jarman Lamare, a photographer with Discovery Channel, who conquered the peak in May last year.
The mountaineer was among 16 climbers of the first Northeast India Top of the World Mount Everest Expedition, 2013, which was flagged off by President Pranab Mukherjee from Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 20.
The members of the expedition were divided into two teams.
Ningthoujam Bidyapati Devi, one among the three climbers of Team One, scripted history yesterday by becoming the first woman from Manipur to scale the peak at 9.30am.
Anand Gurung was the first to scale the summit at 7.35am while Nima Lima scaled the height at 8.30am.
Wansuk was in Team Two, along with six other climbers — David Zohmanggaiha of Mizoram, Kazi Sherpa of Sikkim, N. Chingkheinganba of Manipur, Tarun Saikia of Assam, and two-time-Everester Anshu Jamsenpa of Arunachal Pradesh.
“It is a proud moment not only for the family, but for the people of Meghalaya. She has added another feather in her cap because of her hard work and her adventuring skills,” Angela Myrthong, Wansuk’s mother, said.
Proud of the achievement, Meghalaya home minister Roshan Warjri said a suitable reward awaits the mountaineer following the stupendous achievement.
“It is because of her hard work and perseverance. It is a proud moment for her and a red letter day for the women of Meghalaya,” Warjri, the first woman home minister in the Northeast, said.
She said the department will soon send a proposal to the state government to promote Wansuk.
Earlier, Wansuk had participated in the pre-Everest expedition on Kolahai peak (5,425 metres) and the high altitude physical conditioning at Mt Papsure (6,451 metres) camp in Himachal Pradesh.
She had also bagged two gold medals and a silver in the North East Zone Sports Climbing Committee.
After being enlisted in the Meghalaya police in 2006, Wansuk had undergone basic mountaineering course at the Mountaineering and Skiing Institute, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Uttarkhand and secured high grades.
