The Congress has asked the CBI to summon Union home minister Amit Shah and ask him to furnish all the details of scams in Meghalaya since he had publicly claimed that the Conrad Sangma government was the most corrupt in the country.
Senior BJP leaders had accused Sangma’s National People’s Party government of corruption in the run-up to the February 27 Assembly polls, but the BJP joined the new NPP government after the results.
The Congress’s demand is an attempt to portray as duplicity the home ministry’s move to send the Delhi police to Rahul Gandhi’s residence to seek details of the women who had complained to him about sexual exploitation and domestic violence.
“I wish to bring to your notice the fact that Amit Shah said in his public speech on February 17, 2023, that the then government of Meghalaya was the most corrupt government in the country,” Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh said in a letter to CBI director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal.
“Amit Shah is also the home minister of India. In his capacity as the home minister, he would surely have had access to information and facts that led him to the above conclusion.”
Ramesh added: “For some inexplicable reasons, the home minister has failed to act upon the information regarding the corrupt practices and instances of the then Meghalaya government. Therefore, in the highest national interest, we urge you to summon Amit Shah and ask him to submit all the information and facts that led him to the stated assessment and investigate the matter.”
