Hyderabad, Sept. 16: Mohammed Azharuddin’s teenage son Ayazuddin died on Friday, five days after his new sports bike crashed while he was testing it.

Ayaz, 19, had been in coma since the accident on the outskirts of Hyderabad that also killed his cousin Ajmal ur Rehman, 16, who was riding pillion on the GSX 1000cc Suzuki.

A medical bulletin issued by Dr K. Hari Prasad, CEO of Apollo Hospital, said Mohammed Ayazuddin died at 11.51am because of hypoxic encephalopathy (a condition in which the brain does not get enough oxygen).

After the mandatory post-mortem by doctors from Osmania Hospital, Ayaz’s body was taken home to Banjara Hills where he lived with his elder brother Ashaduddin and their grandparents.

The budding cricketer, whose batting style was said to resemble that of his father, was buried in the evening at Darga-E-Barhane Shah.

Azharuddin, who mostly lives in Mumbai but was in the UK on Sunday when the accident occurred, arrived the next morning. The boys’ mother Naureen, whom Azhar divorced to marry Sangeeta Bijlani, also reached on Monday from America where she had moved after her second marriage.

Ayaz had suffered serious injuries to his kidneys, lungs and brain. Two days ago, doctors had operated on him and removed a kidney after they failed to stop it from bleeding. Yesterday, the doctors reported brain dysfunction.

Chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi and former minister Mohammed Ali Shabbir led the throng of mourners at the hospital today.
