New Delhi, April 26 (Agencies): The Bharatiya Janata Party had won 103 seats, the Aam Aadmi Party 26 and the Congress just eight in the municipal elections here, according to initial results for the total of 272 wards in three civic bodies.

The AAP, which rules the national capital, had already begun claiming that the electronic voting machines or EVMs had been manipulated as trends showed a sweep by the BJP.

”EVM tampering is the bitter truth of the country's democracy. One can crack jokes on us initially, but fearing being made fun of, we cannot refrain from speaking the truth,” deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia told reporters.

After counting of votes began at 8am, the BJP started showing early leads in all the three municipal corporations- North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation – that were created in 2012 by splitting the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

As the BJP trend picked up, the AAP got into a huddle at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence to hammer out the next course of action, which may involve agitation over EVMs as already indicated by the chief minister.

Gopal Rai, a senior minister in the Delhi government, hadsaid an ”EVM wave” is sweeping across the city. By 11am, only one AAP candidate, Ashok Kumar, had won, from east Delhi's Shakurpur ward.

“This isn't a Modi wave, this is an EVM wave. The same happened in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It is a major threat against democracy. The rights of the electorate will have to be ensured. The BJP wants to demolish democracy,” Rai told reporters.

Nagendar Sharma, a senior adviser to the AAP government, tweeted: “Sweeping Delhi MCD polls without sweeping Delhi's streets for a decade. When machines are with you human will is of no relevance.”

The BJP has been ruling the three corporations since the 2012 elections, when it won 142 of the total of 272 sears. The AAP had not yet been formally launched then.

Admitting defeat, Delhi Water Minister Kapil Mishra, who lost three out of five wards in his constituency, said the newly elected MCDs and the Delhi government must now work in tandem for the betterment of the people.

The AAP’s washout came barely two weeks into its drubbing in the Rajouri Garden Assembly byelection and two years after it registered a thumping victory in the assembly polls winning 67 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly.

the BJP won 35 seats and the Aam Aadmi Party managed to get 15 seats in North MCD.

In the East municipal corporation, the BJP won 27 wards while the AAP got only six seats. In the civic body, the Congress bagged six seats.

In South MCD, the BJP won 41 wards while the AAP and the Congress bagged five and seven seats respectively.

In North Delhi, the AAP has municipal wards in Aman Vihar, Mukundpur, Sultan Puri A, Shastri Nagar, Nimri Colony, Ballimaran and Rampura.

The BJP has won wards in Kishan Ganj, Rohtas Nagar, Dilshad Garden, Krishna Nagar among others.
