'We cannot kill a child,' the Supreme Court observed while hearing the Centre's plea seeking recall of its order allowing a married woman, a mother of two, to terminate her 26-week pregnancy. 'Do you want us to tell the doctors at AIIMS to stop the fetal heart?" the bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra asked.
Indian Railways cancelled ten trains and diverted 21 after several coaches of 12506 Delhi-Kamakhya North East Express derailed near the Raghunathpur station in Bihar's Buxar district killing at least four people and injuring many others. The railways ordered a high-level inquiry into the derailment. Fault in tracks was the possible cause of derailment of all the coaches, sources said citing a preliminary investigation report.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed in Tel Aviv as part of a Middle East tour to show Washington's solidarity with Israel after the attacks by Palestinian Hamas militants and to work to prevent the conflict from widening. After Israel, Blinken will head to Jordan, where he will meet with King Abdullah and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
The Supreme Court directed the Centre and the Gujarat government to submit by October 16 the original records related to the remission of sentence of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case and murder of seven of her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots. Besides the petition filed by Bilkis Bano contesting the remission granted to them by the Gujarat government, several other PILs including one by CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali, independent journalist Revati Laul and former vice-chancellor of Lucknow University Roop Rekha Verma have challenged the relief.
Delhi High Court commuted to life term the death penalty awarded to Ariz Khan following his conviction in the sensational 2008 Batla House encounter in which decorated Delhi Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma lost his life. Sharma, an officer of the Delhi Police's Special Cell, was killed in the encounter between police and terrorists in south Delhi's Jamia Nagar on September 19, 2008.
Gujarat High Court refused to stay the summons issued to AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh by a magistrate’s court in a criminal defamation case filed by the Gujarat University over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree. Since the magistrate’s court in Ahmedabad, which is conducting the trial in the defamation case and had issued summons to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders in April, would take up the matter on October 14, senior advocate Rebecca John, appearing for the AAP leaders, urged Justice Doshi to at least give interim relief ahead of that hearing.
Talks have broken off between Hollywood actors and studios, killing any hopes that the strike by performers was coming to an end after nearly three months, as the writers strike recently did. On October 2, for the first time since the strike began July 14, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) had resumed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents studios, streaming services and production companies in strike talks.
Central Panel for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) has withdrawn its circular on conducting vaccine trials on stray dogs that was issued more than a year ago. The decision had drawn flak from the animal rights body People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) which had warned the government panel that its recommendation would open the floodgates not only for stray dogs but also for other feral animals to be used in experiments, such as painful efficacy and toxicity testing, dissections, and demonstrations.
CERT-In has issued a high-severity rated warning cautioning against 'multiple vulnerabilities' in popular web browser Google Chrome, which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and cause denial of service condition on targeted system. Giving technical details, it said the software affected are 'Google Chrome versions prior to 118.0.5993.70/.71 for Windows' and 'Google Chrome versions prior to 118.0.5993.70 for Mac and Linux'.
Telangana is the first state in independent India to have launched a project called 'Mission Bhagiratha' to provide a potable water connection to every home, BRS Working President K T Rama Rao said. In a message posted on social media platform X, Rama Rao, referring to a news story, said that inspired by Telangana's project, the NDA government at the centre had launched its 'Har Ghar Jal' programme a few years later.
