You don’t have to be a Mexican to celebrate Cinco de Mayo — to mark the Battle of Puebla. If you love Mexican food, drop in at Amigos (opposite Jyoti Vihar, Ho Chi Minh Sarani) and enjoy the special spread available till May 26.

First things first, beat the heat with a glass of the non-alcoholic Passion Fruit Frozen Margarita topped with Tabasco caviar. The green, white and red in the drink represent the Mexican flag.

The Tex-Mex restaurant in Calcutta is rustling up a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian appetisers — Cilantro Fries, Tex Mex Wings Chilaquiles and more. But the Mucho Macho Nachos with crispy Mexican blue corn tortilla chips wins hands down. This oversized pyramid of nachos with salsa, guacamole, sour cream, olives and cheese can be shared by three.

The other standout appetiser is Mango Cactus Tostadas. The mix of raw and ripe mangoes tossed with chipotle (chilli) and sweet tender cacti on cornflour tostadas, topped with salsa caviar, is a great sweet-sour combination. “The real taste of Mexican dishes comes from the use of chillies — chipotle, arbol, ancho, guajillo and others. We import these from Mexico. Even blue cornflour is imported for the nachos,” said head chef Asif Mulk.

The Guajillo Chicken Soft Taco is a must-have for fitness freaks. Vegetarians can opt for Mushroom and Caramelised Onion Soft Taco. For true Mexican taste, spice it up with Chile Rellenos that has jalapeno chillies stuffed with Mexican cheese and herb, served with a portion of Mexican rice.

Chocolate Tres Leche, a Mexican cake with a chocolatey twist, and Mango Cigar (crisp pastry cigar stuffed with mascarpone and Alphonso) form the dessert menu.

A meal for two comes for Rs 900.
