Retro chic is the buzzword in fashion these days and it holds just as true for men’s fashion as women’s style. And as a tip of the hat towards the trends of the early ’50s and ’60s (think The Beatles, guys), skinny ties have made a comeback. Just take a look around — from Beiber to Bollywood style icons like Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan, they’re all rocking this trend.
“The trend is definitely popular in Calcutta right now,” says model and fitness trainer Neeraj Surana, who picks up his ties from Satya Paul and Shoppers Stop (Tie Rack). “I prefer slim ties to broader ones. Slim ties make the Indian male look leaner whereas broad ties just make us look broader,” he adds.
Skinny ties come in a variety of fabrics and styles. If, on one hand, there are leather ties in solid black, on the other, there are knit cottons and woollen ties in myriad hues and patterns. “We’ve started manufacturing slim ties for quite a few brands in both prints and stripes. Plus, we have our own collection,” says fashion entrepreneur Ratul Sood, who runs Burlington’s on Park Street.
Ratul suggests a complete slimmed down outfit to make the look work best. “Pair a skinny tie with a slim-fit shirt and suit,” says Ratul.
“This is one trend that works for all kinds of body types — lean, broad or anything in between,” says Sidharth Pansari of Crossword, another slim-tie fan!
