Say hello to Google Pixel

Name matters

Google Pixel is the first phone that has been designed entirely by Google and bears its name. Its earlier attempts at smartphones have been through hardware partners under its Nexus line. This time, it’s about shaking off Google’s reputation as an Internet software company.

Artificial intelligence

AI is at the heart of the future of technology and Google Assistant proves it. The AI-powered helper anticipates your needs, can respond to queries, check calendar appointments, send messages and more. Take that, Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Echo!
Richer picture

At the phone’s launch in San Francisco on Tuesday night, it was said that Pixel has “the best smartphone camera anyone has made”. Of course, Apple enthusiasts armed with the iPhone 7 will debate the claim but Pixel’s 12.3MP rear camera (8MP front) has 1.55-micron image sensors and an f/2.0 aperture, which means sharper pictures in low light.

Virtual reality

The iPhone 7 rival is VR-ready, that is, the handset supports Google’s Daydream virtual reality technology platform. Set to go on sale in November, the headset will come in red, white and slate shades.

Other features

While Pixel comes with a 5-inch display, Pixel XL has a 5.5-inch display. Both displays use AMOLED technology and are made with Gorilla Glass 4. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821, comes with 4GB RAM, 32GB/ 128GB internal storage and a 15-minute charge can yield up to seven hours of usage. And yes, it comes with a 3.5mm jack which the iPhone 7 has done away with.

When and how much

You can pre-order Google Pixel in India, starting October 13. It will cost upwards of Rs 57,000.
