Corporate girl Deepa in the Zee Bangla mega serial Mohona has one foot firmly set in films.
Sweta Tiwari, who became Deepa after playing a battered wife in Devi, is one of the leading faces in Sambit Nag’s to-release film Iti, revolving around an MMS scandal involving seven friends. Before Iti, Sweta had romanced Sharad Kapur in the forgettable Dahek and also acted in Ashish Avikuntak’s debut film Nirakar Chhaya, which was screened at the Locarno Film Festival in 2006.
“In Iti, I play a bubbly college-goer who goes holidaying in Darjeeling with six friends. But the trip changes her life when she gets involved in an MMS scandal,” says the Philosophy (hons) graduate who hails from Uttar Pradesh but was born and brought up in Calcutta.
Sweta was still in college when she auditioned for ETV Bangla and was okayed at one go. “Soon I was anchoring the children’s programme Sobujer Deshe. Then I hosted Mojaru for ETV Bangla, followed by Zee Bangla’s Nari.... Initially directors thought I couldn’t speak Bengali, so offers were few. But now they know that I’m more of a Bengali than anything else,” smiles Sweta.
