After two successful bestsellers, Twinkle Khanna launched her third book — Pyjamas are Forgiving. At the launch she got quirky by hinting that husband Akshay Kumar doesn’t read books, but in the same breath said it doesn’t stop her from writing.
“Pyjamas are Forgiving is my third book. I look at it in two ways. It’s about a woman finding a place for herself in the world. It is personally interesting that a woman is finding redemption and not finding a man. Also, I find it interesting, as it is set in a stringent idyllic ayurvedic retreat where you are in a confined environment. It’s like how one is confined in the Bigg Boss house and all the emotions run high. That was interesting for me.”
This is her third book after Mrs Funnybones and The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad, which were hugely successful. Mrs Funnybones was a compilation of columns she wrote for a newspaper, while The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad was a collection of short stories — one of which was adapted for Akshay’s PadMan, produced by Twinkle.
Mrs Funnybones sold over 1 lakh copies making Twinkle India’s highest-selling female writer of 2015.
She said: “For me redemption at this point in my life is the fact that it is not enough for me that I am leading a self-sufficient life and I have achieved equality in life. I need to help other women find and achieve redemption in their lives.”
Extracts from the book mentions a prominent political figure but Twinkle says she doesn’t fear anyone taking offence to it. “I don’t think I have written anything that will offend anyone. Whatever has been written has been done in good jest. Also, I hope whatever I have written is taken in good humour and all can enj oy their read.”
The actress who wore a colourful dress during the book launch says at this moment she is celebrating the Supreme Court’s historic strike down of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. “I am wearing this rainbow-colour dress to celebrate the historic decision taken by the court.”
On the title of the book Twinkle says: “Pyjamas are Forgiving is an apt title (for the book), as the protagonist of the story throws off her pyjamas. We are very hard on ourselves. We wear skinny jeans. In my book the pyjama girl is a lot more forgiving to herself.”
Asked if she would like any of her books to be adapted into a film, Twinkle says: “I don’t think every story should be made into a film. I love writing. I have done my job as of now to the best of my ability. I don’t think every book needs to be turned into a movie.”
Asked if she would be again seen on Karan Johar’s talkshow Koffee with Karan, Twinkle said: “I have already done a show and that is more than enough. I like my coffee black and Karan’s humour is black too. I think we both gel a bit on that. So I think that’s all with Koffee with Karan.”
