Sreelekha Mitra will do a Vidya Balan in a soon-to-air telefilm. The homemaker-turned-actress of Tollylights has slipped into the studio chair of a feisty radio jockey in Mon.

While Vidya’s Jahnavi is known for her Good Morning Mumbai show in Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Sreelekha plays Katha, an agony aunt who is swamped with problems of heartbreaks and heartaches. But while solving other people’s problems, Katha discovers her husband (Kaushik Ghosh) has strayed into an extramarital affair. How Katha copes with her personal crisis is what the director Sarmi Pande is trying to unravel.

“Katha has solved several such problems over the phone. But when she is faced with a similar crisis, she becomes so upset and restless that she even misbehaves with her callers,” explains Sarmi. Gita Dey plays a lonely widow with whom Katha bonds in her distress.

Mon airs on Tara Muzik, July 6, at 7.30pm.

“I was very particular about who would play Katha. Sreelekha fit the role. She has a modern yet traditional face just like Katha’s.... Though Mon is a telefilm, it has many cinematic moments. I consciously made it like that as I will be starting a film soon. Mon has a twist in the end too,” reveals Sarmi in between shots.

Sreelekha, on her part, was “drawn” to the role when Sarmi told her about it. “My role has got sweetness, romance and some comic moments. I will play an RJ for the first time and so I am very excited,” says Sreelekha, who recently quit the mega serial Probahini Ei Shomoy on Aakaash.

“I stepped out of the serial because of personal problems but I have never said no to TV. I did TV even after my critically acclaimed film Kantataar and the commercially successful Annadata. I have done 25 films. But I have cut down on my television work because TV is time-consuming. I like to choose roles that give me creative satisfaction,” smiles the only Tolly heroine to play wife to Aamir Khan!
