With Poila Baisakh just around the corner, authentic Bengali food is all that we have been craving. t2 dropped by at Novotel Kolkata Hotel and Residences on a balmy Saturday afternoon to check out their Poila Baisakh buffet spread, and we must say, the hearty meal made us crave a cat nap. Here’s all that we pigged out on.

Bhaja bhuji (fried savouries) sets the tone for a Bengali meal. Our buffet spread consisted of deep-fried Bengali delicacies such as Beetroot Chop (minced beetroot coated with crumbs and deep-fried), Postor Bora (cutlet made of poppy seeds), Prawn Kabiraji, and Topshe Maachh Bhaja (topshe fish coated in gram flour batter and spices and deep-fried).
What good is Nava Varsha without some mishti mukh? From Mishti Doi to Lyangcha, Chamcham, Rosogolla and Kamala Bhog, the dessert section is extensive. “The best part about our spread is that even when it comes to the sweets, we do not outsource it. Our in-house halwais make them fresh each day,” said Neelabh Sahay, executive chef, Novotel Kolkata, who took t2 through the spread in detail, along with chef de cuisine Sirajul Rahman.
If you are a seafood lover, then you can add some ilish and prawn to your meal, such as this yummy coconut gravy-based Chingri Malai Curry for Rs 400 more.
