Pakistani students on International Women?s Day |
All for a cause
International Women’s Day came and went, leaving some hopeful but most confused. Formalised at the 1910 Socialist International Copenhagen summit, it’s supposed to be a day that recognises the struggle for women’s rights, but has been turned over the decades by evil advertisers into a strange chutney of Mother’s and Valentine’s Days. Which is why Women’s Day celebrations this year were, to put it mildly, varied. South Korean women celebrated the abolition of family registration; the Delhi government announced special schemes for women, and at the other end of the spectrum, policemen in Russia gave women drivers flowers instead of speeding tickets and Mumbai-based stylist Sapna Malhotra, asked by a newspaper what the best thing about being a woman was, replied ‘boobs’.
