Crunchy riffs, searing guitar solos, triumphant blasts of sound, soulful melodies, singalong choruses, and folk and Bengali traditional songs in the new-age format meshed with the message of love and the roars and screams of fans for Gaan Piriti, in association with t2, on Valentine’s Day. Fossils, The Anupam Roy Band, James, Iman Chakraborty, Sahana Bajpaie and Oyshee rocked Nazrul Mancha. t2 sang along...
James took the stage to loud cheers and claps, and from the word go the Bangladeshi rockstar cast his spell with thundering rock anthems and exquisite guitar solos. He kept fans on the edge of their toes, belting out guitar-driven nuggets like Didimoni. Fans sang along with James, shouting out whole verses or choruses of songs. As James launched into Bheegi bheegi, fans whipped out their cell phones to capture the magic moment.
The Anupam Roy Band was the first act on the stage, regaling audiences with one crowd fave after another. With a certain casual charm and candour, Anupam ruled the stage. The crowd went into click frenzy as Anupam punched the air, waved at them and belted out their fave songs.
Fossils took the stage by storm, delivering a bevy of singalong moments with their power-packed rock hits. Singer-songwriter Rupam was electric on stage. “This was one of my best performances. Also, it was great to experience whole-hearted participation from the audience. One of the best things about Gaan Piriti is that people will get to see the concert again, like on the web portal Hoichoi,” Rupam told t2.
Iman Chakraborty won over hearts with her scintillating renditions.
Sahana Bajpaie wowed with songs like Kotobaro bhebechinu and O je manena mana, “quintessential love songs by Tagore as it was Valentine’s Day!”, Bengali folk songs and one Santhali jhumur song. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially since artistes from both the Bengals came together in Calcutta. I personally felt blessed to be a part of the gig because I had lived a big chunk of my life in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and also to be performing on the same stage as my favourite Bengali rockstar James bhai was humbling to say the least. Music fests tend to focus on similar kinds of genres but Gaan Piriti brought together various genres like pop, rock, folk, fusion, modern and Tagore,” Sahana told t2.
Oyshee’s remarkable vocal range left fans wide-eyed and open-mouthed. The singer from Bangladesh got the crowd cheering to the popular Dev-Koel hit O Madhu from the film Rangbaaz.
IN THE AUDIENCE
“My favourite is Anupam Roy. I love his voice, and the fact that he started the show was a major high point for me... also I got to hear a new voice as well... Oyshee... she is like a small package of dhamaka... what a powerful voice she has,” said actress Anindita Bose, with actor Saurav Das.
Parambrata Chattopadhyay
“I grew up listening to James. I still play the guitar to his songs. He is quite an influential rocker. That voice/timbre is unmatchable,” said actor Anindya Chatterjee.
