Today is Father’s Day. Reason enough to share trivia tidbits about the pioneer of quizzing in India, my dad, Neil ’Brien. He conducted the nation’s first Open Quiz when he was 33, in 1967. He still presents one quiz show every year, even at 78. lBefore quizzing, acting and directing plays was his passion. He directed (the then ‘gawky’) Amitabh Bachchan in a few plays in Calcutta. lHis biggest stage production was The Passion of Christ in the 1960s, which he directed and played the title role in. He was a University Blue in hockey and often took the mike at large events to sing hits of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole.lHe was a three-term (nominated) MLA and one-term MP, representing the Anglo-Indian community. lHe cannot fry an egg, or pack a suitcase or cut his own nails or send SMS...my ma has done all that and more in their 53 years together!
