The German Consulate in Calcutta got into Xmas mode by holding a charity Christmas market on December 3 on the consulate greens in Alipore. Co-organised by Calcutta International Women’s Club, the Sunday market included stalls by NGOs and small businesses, along with famous German sips and bites.

A nativity play, carols by the Young Artists’ Choir and beautiful Christmas decorations set the mood.

“I have been here only three months.... It is very uplifting to see all the activities. A number of NGOs are getting an opportunity to talk about their activities and sell their products for charity, adhering to the Christmas spirit. I am also very encouraged because I clearly see that people want to be here for the atmosphere and at the same time support good causes. They are buying raffle tickets, the proceeds of which also go for charity... they are buying

German cookies and indulging in Gluehwein (mulled wine),” said German consul-general Michael Feiner.

“There is a fundamental difference between Christmas in Germany and here in Calcutta — the weather! Back in Germany, you might be having snow this time of the year and it can be very cold and gloomy. So people like to get together in a cosy atmosphere to enjoy the Christmas spirit. Here in Calcutta, we have a very comfortable and cool weather and people like to be outside,” said consul-general Feiner.
