Cool college hangouts

Hide from the sun at these cool hangout spots on your campus

LORETO COLLEGE

Guess who is the most in demand on campus in summer? Wordsworth. Not the poet but the oldest tree in the college. The bench under the tree is the most vied-for spot because it is outside the four walls and yet out of the sun. The occasional breeze provides much relief. There are other trees bordering the lawn that have benches under them too. Perfect for spending free time.
The other go-to spots on the Park Street campus during summer (actually this is an all-season spot) are the front and the back porches. The short stone steps remain cool in the scorching heat, which make an ideal spot to park ourselves for adda.

JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY

Though World View and Milanda’s canteen are the most popular places to chill, walking down in the heat is a bother for some departments, like philosophy and women’s studies, who would rather hang out at the Open Air Theatre. It might not be the “cool” spot on campus but the spacious, shaded interior and the huge pillars right outside the theatre, whose bases become seats for us, are cool enough to hang out in summer.
Computer Rooms have comparatively fewer people, very fast Internet and air-conditioning. Any surprise that there is almost a game of musical chair during recess in the summer? Batches of people take turns to find an empty chair, the top of a table or even a nice spot on the floor to laugh and chat in between classes. The only disadvantage is that the professors’ offices are right outside the door. But we try to be as quiet as possible.

ILEAD MEDIA & MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

Even though the entire campus is centrally air-conditioned, most students are always found at the sports complex during summer. Just a two-minute walk from the main campus, the sports complex is one of the most lively spots. We mean if we have a pool room, a cafe and canteen, and a terrace area with the football field all in one zone, where else would you expect us to be?

PRESIDENCY UNIVERSITY

The Quad is the quintessential place for adda, lebu cha and lyadh in summer. People occupy different parts of the quadrangle, playing cards, listening to music or even completing assignments. Always breezy and cool, the Quad is the place to be to avoid the heat.

THE BHAWANIPUR EDUCATION SOCIETY COLLEGE

We just show up for class more often in summer. We have air-conditioned classrooms, so why would we be anywhere else? Avoid the scorching heat and the sweating, and get ahead in the “required attendance” race.
The sports arena is one of those all-year-round popular zones but there are definitely more people in summer. Located on the ground floor of the main campus building, the arena houses literally every indoor game possible, from table tennis and snooker to chess and even carom. This makes it a perfect hangout when you want to bunk the AC classroom for a more fun AC space.

ST. XAVIER’S COLLEGE

You would find it difficult to get us there any other time of the year, but when the mercury is rising, the library becomes a popular place. There is air-conditioning, duh! Plus there is a canteen just outside to satisfy our hunger pangs. Also, this is one way we are forced to catch up on all our class reading.
Summer, winter, sunshine or rain, you can’t keep us away from the Green Benches! If you ask us why we’ll say because there is shade and stand fans to keep us cool if we can bag a spot near them. But in all honesty, it is equidistant from both the canteen and the back gate and we are almost certain to run into someone we know. It is the ‘it place’ to be in college!
