Hardik Kansara’s painting has nostalgia oozing from every pore. “I miss the small city in Gujarat where I was born,” said the artist. From the cityscape to the walls, distinct from each other, his painting taps all his boyhood memories.

t2 caught up with a clutch of artists ahead of the exhibition…

Triangular Theory of love

Suparna Mondal continues to weave her take on “urban life” through her mixed media canvases. “Calcuttans understand art and that is such a huge takeaway for any artist,” she said.

I have curated the national art section and we have collaborated with Great Banyan Art, an online art gallery based in Delhi, for all the international artists. Last time we got a great response and this time we wanted to do it on a bigger scale. Mom and dad (Preeti and Sanjiv Goenka) being so fond of art, I kind of understand it more, but I have a lot more to learn and I am enjoying the process

Breakfast in Bed

My themes:  Are usually centred around women.

My mediums: Acrylic and oils.

My favourite artists: Georgia O’Keeffe is one of my favourites. I just love her happy, colourful paintings.

Art is: Freedom.

Gabriele Sermuksnyte

Saccharine Unicorn

My themes: The two works I will be exhibiting in Calcutta combine large-sized canvases, dramatic baroque-style colours and contemporary mythology of popular culture. The main characters in my compositions are women, whose faces are either not depicted at all, or hidden under masks, and any vestiges of emotion or character are eliminated. While representing the bodies as objects, I draw attention to the feminine-related gender stereotypes existing in society today.

My mediums: Acrylic on canvas.

My favourite artists: Jean-Michel Basquiat. I love his expression. I also adore Marlene Dumas, Luc Tuymans, Gerhard Richter, Michael Borremans, Anselm Kiefer.

Art is: A visual diary.

Pascale Taurua

The French Shoes

My themes: Women, shoes especially.... we take it out of its organic function to make it an object of desire, to signify what force animates women and what story they want to tell.

My mediums: In my paintings where everything seems fixed, the colours then create the emotion. I structure all my compositions with large flat areas of colour.

My favourite artists: Paul Gauguin because he was influenced by the tropical environment and the Polynesian culture, where I come from. But I also find myself in the essential characteristics of his painting.

Art is: Liberating!
