A group of friends who recently graduated in food science and nutrition management from J.D. Birla Institute put together the ninth and final edition of The Bakedown Sale in New Alipore. Aditi Nevatia, Shubhangi Balasaria, Palak Agrawal, Maitree Shah, Mallika Bhandari and Devyani Sarraf are poised to head off in their respective directions of higher studies later in the year and this sale, curated especially for Father’s Day, was a last hurrah for the girl gang.
The delish fare baked by them included mango basil tarts, chocolate brookies, blueberry crumble and the Father’s Day special — a moustache-shaped cookie with chocolate sprinkles. The group had even arranged for a giveaway, with the last customer of the day getting all leftover products for free. The sale was set up on a pavement in Block G, New Alipore.
Initially created during the summer holidays as a fun way to pass their time, The Bakedown Sale was inspired by the bakeries and patisseries that Devyani saw in Paris in 2016.
“It was in our first year that we discovered that baking was a common passion and then came together as friends based on it. It’s the only thing apart from course work that we have done as a project, together. It’s so strange to think it’s at an end,” said Mallika.
The group has plans to keep their presence on social media active by blogging about any interesting confectionery items they may come across in their travels. They also hope to hold a sale when they’re all in town together in the future.
