The company on Monday unveiled the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which is a mid-size SUV developed grounds up by Maruti and will be produced by Toyota at its Bidadi factory.

Mayor Firhad Hakim, who was present at the unveiling, requested the company “to price the product keeping in mind the common man”.

Toyota, a player in the premium segment, is trying to penetrate the mass market segment with products developed under the global alliance.

“So far 66 per cent of our customers for the Glanza and Urban Cruiser have been firsttime buyers,” said Vikram Gulati, executive vice-president, TKM.

Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki on Monday said it has commenced bookings for its upcoming mid-sized SUV Grand Vitara.

The customers can prebook the Grand Vitara — which would compete with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Tata Harrier — at an initial payment of Rs 11,000.

Mercedes numbers

Mercedes-Benz India recorded its highest ever Q2 numbers in India by retailing 7,573 units in the January-June period, a growth of 56 per cent over the year-ago numbers.

The record numbers came despite global supply-side challenges leading to longer waiting periods and a rise in operating costs.

Despite these challenges, the company ended the quarter with the highest-ever order bank of 6000-plus units.
