Calcutta, Oct. 9: Microfinance firms have played a key role in disbursement of the Mudra loan in Bengal in the April-June quarter of 2017-18.
According to data sourced from the State Level Banker's Committee of Bengal, all financial institutions have together disbursed Rs 1,902.10 crore during the quarter ended June.
Of this, NBFC microfinance institutions have disbursed Rs 762.77 crore, constituting 40 per cent of the total disbursement.
Of the total disbursement by NBFC MFIs, which included the likes of SKS, Arohan, Janalakshmi and Village Financial Services, 98 per cent of the disbursement was in the category of loans up to Rs 50,000.
While the contribution of public sector banks to the total disbursement was Rs 813.04 crore, private banks disbursed Rs 238.73 crore.
Foreign banks, regional rural banks and other financial institutions constituted the rest.
Officials of the United Bank of India, the SLBC convenor bank, said the disbursements have been satisfactory.
A countrywide promotion campaign is being undertaken by the Centre to increase the awareness of the Mudra scheme.
