Patna, Aug. 21: The importance of conservation of wetlands in the state was the prime focus of a meet, “Natural and cultural heritage of wetlands in Bihar”, at Shrikrishna Science Centre today.
Environmental, geological and botanical experts, present at the meet organised by NGO Natural and Cultural Heritage Development Society, shared information on the different wetlands.
Sameer Verma, head of department, botany, HD Jain College, Ara, made a presentation on Kuseshwar Asthan wetland of Darbhanga. “Wetlands absorb all the toxic elements and leave freshwater that supports a vast eco-system. The 6,700-hectare wetland is also a notified bird sanctuary, where one can find 25,000-1,00,000 birds of more than 40 species, both resident and migratory, in winter. But lately, the wetland is degrading as water is being discharged for irrigational purposes. Discharge of fertilisers from the nearby areas is also changing its chemical composition.”
Ashok Ghosh, head of department, environment and water management, AN College, made a presentation on Kabar Tal in Begusarai, a habitat for migratory and residential birds of 186 species.
