Patna, Feb. 2: With the state having stepped into its centenary year, a search is on to know about the officers who served as senior superintendents of police (SSPs) or superintendents of police (SPs) of Patna since 1900.

The police representatives are visiting libraries in the city as well as checking old gazettes. Patna SSP Alok Kumar told The Telegraph that the state archives located on Bailey Road would be requested to dig out whatever they can find in this connection.

“At present, we have the succession list of the Patna SSPs from 1947. It will be really interesting if we can find out about those officers who had served as SSPs or SPs before Independence. Many of them could be from England. The search will take time but we are positive about unearthing the details,” the officer said.

“The Khuda Bakhsh Library is said to be the oldest library in the capital. The Sinha Library, too, is very old and both have rare books and manuscripts. We are sure these libraries have a lot of information about old Bihar and Patna. We have sent our representatives there and have requested the library authorities to help us out,” the SSP said.

Kumar said once all the details are in place, the names and the office terms of those officers would also be put up on the succession board.

“All police officers having served in Patna as the SSP or SP have played a vital role and recognising them is the best thing we can do at the moment. With their names and their office terms on the succession board, people will get to know about them. The search is on in full swing,” the officer said, adding that the old state gazette notifications would also be checked.

“We are trying everything possible to ensure that we get the information. In fact, we have come to know that an officer bearing the surname Khan served as Patna SSP before 1947. His office term is presently being searched,” the SSP said.

The present succession list, at Kumar’s office, has names of 47 officers who served as Patna SSP.

The first name is that of C.M. Jha, who served as Patna SSP from August 15 to September 9, 1947.
