Patna, May 3: The city would have to remain content with few light showers, while the weathermen predict Nor’westers to hit Bihar’s northeastern districts in the next few days.

Nor’wester, a sudden thunderstorm during the summer, could prove to be a much-needed break from the unbearable heat, thanks to the climb of the mercury. Last Saturday, the maximum temperature touched 42.1°C in Patna. Today, it was 36.6°C.

Meteorologists have predicted the Nor’westers to hit places in northeast Bihar in the next three to four days. Central Bihar districts, including Patna, would have to be content with a cloud cover and a few spells of light shower. Squalls could hit the city.

Nor’wester, the saviour in the summer months, is awaited with bated breath. It has not rained for nearly two months in Bihar. It is the first time after 2010 that it did not rain in Patna in April.

If this morning’s weather was anything to go by, the residents might not complain. After morning walks in the stifling heat over the past several weeks, joggers woke to a sky usually seen during monsoon in July. Residents happily took a stroll in the breeze under overcast skies. Ravi Agrawal, a Kankerbagh resident, said: “The overcast skies early this morning gave me some hope for a thunderstorm soon.”

Weathermen attributed the advent of overcast conditions and chance of Nor’westers to hit the state to a twin cyclonic circulation in and around the region.

“One cyclonic circulation is prevailing over east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, while another is over the sub-Himalayan Bengal and Bangladesh. Both conditions are leading to continuous moisture incursion in Bihar. So, we expect the districts in northeast Bihar to get isolated thundershowers, accompanied by winds blowing at 70-80kmph over the next three to four days,” said Ashish Sen, director, India Meteorological Department, Patna.

For Patna, he ruled out the possibility of heavy showers but said there could be squalls. “Winds are likely to blow around 50-60kmph in the central parts of the state, including Patna, but it is expected to be accompanied by light rain. Such activities are likely to prevail till May 7,” said Sen.

The dry spell is worrying farmers, as rain in districts like Bhagalpur is crucial for the cultivation of mango, litchi and other summer crops.
