To make Aadhaar registration and other related work easier for Bihar residents, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has decided to use post offices in the state to carry out the task.
At present, multiple government and private agencies are doing the work.
Given the fact that around 18 per cent of the state population still don't have Aadhaar, it has been decided to expand the base so that people could get the unique number generated.
"The 34 head post-offices in the state would undertake the Aadhaar creation work," postmaster general Bihar (east) Anil Kumar told The Telegraph, adding that the facility would be rolled out in July.
In addition to making Aadhaar number, the postal department would also use its infrastructure to update Aadhaar records of those who want to make certain changes, which might have been there in the original Aadhaar card issued to them. It could be change in spelling of names, address, date of birth among other things. To get these things updated one needs to produce the relevant certificates.
"We have a network of 1,056 sub-post offices, which would be used for updating Aadhaar records of those who want to change the details," said the postmaster general.
Prior to making the commitment for undertaking Aadhaar-related work, the postal department has started necessary preparations, as Aadhaar details need to be collected electronically.
"Personnel from the UIDAI trained a select group of staff who has been developed as master trainers. Now, the trainers are conducting training in different post offices so that the trained manpower could be ready when the Aadhaar-making work starts. The training process would be completed by June 30. We are also purchasing related equipment, which are used for collecting various details of an individual, including the biometric records used in generating Aadhaar number," Anil said.
While the facility would be rolled out on July 10, it would take another three months to equip all the post offices with the necessary facilities for Aadhaar-related work.
The post offices would have separate counters for Aadhaar-related work and the services would not be categorised according to districts. For example, if a resident of Purnea wants to get his Aadhaar card generated in a post office in Patna the same would be possible provided the individual produces related documents such as address proof, identify proof for making the Aadhaar card.
