Patna, Feb. 13: Couples need not fear a crackdown by the lotus party this Valentine’s Day. The men-in-uniform have decided to beef up security.
There will be police presence everywhere, said deputy superintendent of police (law and order) Lalit Mohan Sharma.
“All the police stations have been alerted. There will be intensive patrolling. Teams of officers will be on the move constantly,” said Sharma. Police have also promised to patrol parks to check the moral police. But youths and couples are somewhat in a fix because Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, the hot spot for lovers, will be closed tomorrow. As a result, most of them may be forced indoors in search of privacy. Others have a unique way to spend time with their beloved: an intimate autorickshaw ride around the thoroughfares of the city.
“Autos are the best option, as they are safe and comfortable,” said Rishi Kumar, a 24-year-old college student.
Navneet, an employee of a telecom company, said: “The autos move slowly and it gives ample time with one’s beloved. As they are constantly on the move, they are relatively safe.
“I will book and autorickshaw and go for a ride with my girlfriend,” he added.
Autorickshaw drivers claim this is not the first time they have given couples rides around the city. “Last year too, I took a couple for a trip around the city for a few hours,” said Raman, who plies his auto in Dakbungalow Chowk area.
Taking a couple for a romantic ride also ensures extra bucks for auto drivers. “I was given a handsome tip by the couple. I am hoping for some extra income tomorrow,” added Raman.
Couples, however, are not convinced of the promises of security made by the police.
“Police promise security every year but its never in place. Members of various organisations harass couples, beat them up and insult them. Police take little or no action. Even restaurants are not safe on Valentine’s Day,” said Rishi.
Navneet added: “One could go to a cinema. But members of organisations that target couples on Valentine’s Day could come and create a ruckus there as well. There is hardly any security.”
Police, however, claim there will be security this year. “Officers and constables of the women’s cell will be present in parks and gardens to provide security to couples. But couples should not behave in a way that will be offensive to others. Valentine’s Day is not a licence for obscenity. Other people also need these places,” said a police officer.
A source said officers would also patrol public places in plain clothes to check troublemakers and eve-teasers.
“With a lot of couples venturing out on Valentine’s Day, troublemakers and eve-teasers have a field day. We will try to check any untoward incident,” said the officer.
