Patna, July 15: A middle-aged woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well along with her two kids at Biharsharif in Nalanda district, around 70km southeast of Patna, on Saturday.

Police said Sudha Devi and her two minor children - Vikram (son) and Kriti (daughter) - jumped into a well at Rajakuan village under the jurisdiction of Bihar police station in Nalanda district following a quarrel with her husband Birendra Prasad the night before.

Residents immediately reached the spot and rushed the three to the nearby hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.

The woman's husband, Birendra, fled from his house as soon as he got to know of the alleged suicide.

Bihar police station house officer Uday Kumar said, prima facie, it appeared to be a case of suicide.

But the woman's father and other relatives, who rushed to Biharsharif hospital where the bodies were kept for post-mortem, alleged that Sudha was being harassed for dowry.

"The police will investigate the case from various angles," SHO Uday Kumar said. "At present a case of unnatural death has been lodged in the case and further investigation into the tragedy is underway."

He further said that the post-mortem report would help the police ascertain the actual cause of death.

Some residents, however, told the police that the couple had quarrelled over some trivial issue on Friday night. The police have not recovered any suicide note.
