Patna, Dec. 26: Bapu's Champaran Satyagraha will come alive once again, on Rajpath this Republic Day.

"It was Champaran that introduced me to India," Mahatma Gandhi wrote in one of his letters to follower Mirabehn in 1921. After two years of Bihar missing the R-Day parade mark, the same Champaran has ensured Bihar's tableau joins other states in going down Rajpath on January 26, 2016.

The state's tableau is based on the centenary of Bapu's Satyagraha Movement from Champaran.

Krishna Ranjan Sharma, assistant director at Bihar Information Centre, New Delhi, told The Telegraph: "Our entry has been selected for the Republic Day parade. Bihar would be among the 14 states which would showcase their tableaux in the parade. Our theme is based on the celebration of 100 years of Mahatma Gandhi's Champaran Satyagraha movement."

Gandhian Razi Ahmad said: "It was during the first meeting of the Congress at Lucknow in 1916 that several leaders from Bihar pursued him (Bapu) to start a movement against the atrocities on farmers in Champaran. Gandhi assured them that he would visit Champaran and it is in this regard that he arrived in Patna for the first time on April 10, 1917."

The proposed Bihar tableau will also be designed similarly. "We will showcase atrocities committed by the British on farmers at Champaran through graphics and paintings on the tableau. Besides, forced farming of indigo would also be depicted on the tableau's panels," said Sharma.

Sources said a team of artists would travel to New Delhi in January to prepare the tableau. It has to be ready by January 20.A song sung by "Bihar Kokila" Sharda Sinha would be played with the state's tableau.

In 2015 and 2014, Bihar failed to make it to the parade.

Every year, a selection committee under the defence ministry selects a handful of tableaux for the R-Day parade. The tableaux display the country's culture, heritage and achievements. According to sources, the entries sent by states have to pass three rounds of scrutiny by the selection committee.

"The criteria set for selection of tableaux are quite stringent. The panel members usually look for three parameters - international branding, national integration and aesthetic value," said a senior official in the state information and public relations department.

The theme for Bihar's tableau at Delhi in 2013 was Mithila ka Sikki (a traditional folk craft from the Mithila region) art. The year before that, the theme was Dharhara ki Beti. Dharhara, a village in Bhagalpur district is famous for its tradition of planting trees on birth of a girl child in a family.

While the state is excited about the selection in the national tableaux parade, preparations are also afoot for the R-Day celebrations in Patna's Gandhi Maidan. Around a dozen departments, including information and public relations, health and education, are expected to display their tableaux during the Patna parade.
