Applicants to the four-year-undergraduate programme (FYUP) in Delhi University this year are in a fix with the Centre hinting that it can roll back the course structure.

However, most of the students who took admission last year believe that the FYUP has promised that it would make the degree more “employable” as it stresses on practical approach to university education.

“Earlier, students in the three-year undergraduate programme could just have pursued a BA Pass degree but they are now studying a subject proper. Even if they want to leave after three years, they will have a bachelor’s degree, which is far more credible than a BA Pass degree. We only look at students doing honours but only 20 per cent of students in DU used to go for an honours degree,” said Nikhat Parveen, a Miranda House student.

As per the FYUP introduced last year, students have to take up 11 mandatory foundation courses and two discipline courses, one being what they major in. They can get an associate baccalaureate (after two years), baccalaureate (three years), or a baccalaureate with honours (four years), just in line with academic pattern in the US and several other countries.

Shubham Bhartia, studying in Hindu college, agreed: “The programme has also promoted practical education, which a lot of students have liked. Those protesting should understand that blackboard teaching needed to stop so that students gather skills along with knowledge.”

Since the programme is only a year old, most students are waiting to see how the discipline-II courses do. A student of South Campus said: “Everyone is eagerly waiting for the discipline-II courses. However, I think the new batch of FYUP will be more organised.”

On the other hand, the university, gearing up to release the first cut-off lists, has decided that this academic session onwards it will upload answer keys and OMR sheets of entrance examinations on its website. While answer keys will be uploaded within 24 hours of the completion of the test, candidates can object to the answer keys and apply for correction within 48 hours of the keys being uploaded.

The university will also allow candidates to obtain their evaluated OMR response sheets within seven days of the date of declaration of results.
