September 26 would become memorable forever to students passing out from the hallowed portals of Central University of Bihar. They will receive their degrees from Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari.
At the varsity’s first convocation since it opened in 2009, Ansari will address the students, teachers and employees, while chancellor and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will be the guest of honour. Students belonging to 2009-11, 2010-12, and 2011-13 sessions will receive degrees from the hands of the distinguished guests, including Governor D.Y. Patil.
Visibly excited, Amit Kumar, a passout of the 2010-12 session from development studies branch who works at a non-government organisation, said: “It is good that the varsity would hold its first convocation. I will surely attend the event. I am looking forward to visiting the institute once again and meeting my friends and teachers.”
Varsity registrar Mohammad Nehal said: “The varsity would hold its first convocation on September 26 at the transit campus at BIT-Patna.”
Sources said around 150 students would be given degrees along with toppers of the three batches. The toppers will also receive the chancellor’s gold medal for best graduate of the year.
CUB was set up in 2009 with the launch of a postgraduate programme (MA) in development studies. A year later, the university expanded with the launch of postgraduate programmes in mathematics, statistics, biotechnology, environmental science and computer science.
In 2011, CUB, still struggling to get its permanent address owing to differences between the state government and the Centre over site finalisation issue, introduced MSc in bioinformatics and MA in communication and media studies.
Last year, the Centre gifted two central universities to Bihar at Gaya and Motihari.
Vice-chancellor Janak Pandey said: “Since its launch in 2009 with limited resources and a postgraduate programme, the varsity has grown manifold and offers postgraduate programmes in 16 streams.”
Pandey added that with its shift to the Gaya campus, the varsity would launch four undergraduate and four postgraduate programmes. MA in sociology, MA in political science and international relations, MA in English and MA in Hindi would be the four new courses run from the Gaya campus.
Fresh undergraduate programmes would include four-year BA/BEd dual degree, four-year BSc/BEd dual degree apart from integrated BALLB and BScLLB courses.
Registrar Nehal said: “Our prime focus is to impart quality higher education, which is reflected through our passouts who have been placed in NGOs and other sectors. Many more students are preparing for National Eligibility Test (NET), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).”
Moreover, plenty of CUB alumni are pursuing MPhil and PhD at JNU and other premier universities. The CUB Gaya campus would hold its first orientation programme on Monday.
