Patna College principal N.K. Chaudhary last Thursday inaugurated the first Papiya Ghosh Memorial Lecture at the institution with an emotional tribute to the late history professor.

Padamlata Thakur, the coordinator of the women studies department, Patna University, delivered the lecture. She spoke on the socio-religious reform movement in 19th century India and women.

Thakur iterated the contribution of women in the Indian freedom movement and also shed light on Papiya's research work on women studies. She said: 'Professor Ghosh was extremely attached to Bihar. She even left Hindu College, Delhi, and moved to Bihar where she joined the Patna University. Here, she carried forward her research in women studies.'

Papiya, a teacher in the postgraduate history department of Patna University, was found murdered in her home in Patliputra Colony on December 3, 2006.

Patna College principal Chaudhary described Papiya Ghosh as an outstanding scholar, teacher and, above all, an outstanding human being who was committed to justice and human welfare.

During the memorial lecture, Sumant Niyogi, former head of department, history, Patna University, also highlighted the contributions of Brahmo Samaj to the improve the condition of women in society.

 

Study honour

Research and studies conducted at the Chandragupt Institute of Management, Patna, are being increasingly recognised by academics and industry bodies.

Couple of weeks back, students from the management cradle presented their paper on the education index in context to Bihar's districts. Late last month, K. Balakrishnan, the institution's dean, presented a paper on building enterprise wide innovation at a symposium in Pune.

Organised at the Hindustan Petroleum Management Development Institute from November 24-25, the dean's paper was based on research in innovative organisations. His work won the Best Paper Award.

At least 30 papers were presented during the symposium. Speakers included IIM-Indore director and faculty members from IIM-Calcutta, IIM-Udaipur, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Symbiosis Institute of Business Management.

Day for founder

St Xavier's College of Education principal Father Thomas Perumalil S.J. inaugurated an event on December 3 to mark the birthday of the institution's founder.

The institution calls the event College Day. The event started with the screening of a short film on the college's founder. Present at the programme were William D'Souza, the archbishop of Patna archdiocese (chief guest), Don Bosco High School director Alfred D'Rozario and St Michael's High School principal Father Peter Arockiaswamy.

The students then took over.

First, Susmita and group performed the welcome song. Another group followed with a dance on women empowerment. Shaily and group presented a skit, Nai Shiksha Pranali, to show it was possible to bring changes in the education system if people had the will to do so.

Nagpuri dance, a tribal form of Jharkhand, was another attraction of the programme.

Winners of an essay competition held on Hindi Divas this year were also felicitated during the College Day celebrations.

Athletics moment

Director-general of police P.K. Thakur inaugurated the sports meet of Patna Women's College on Saturday.

Students of the different departments took part in the annual event.

Sister Marie Jessi, the principal, motivated the students to showcase their athletics talents as well as appreciate the hard work put in by the institution's sports faculty to make the event a success.

BA Part I students presented yogasan. BCom students put up a taekwondo performance.

Chief guest Thakur advised the students, who did not win anything at the sports meet, to try again next time, but not lose hope. He said: 'We must all try to excel in whatever we do. At the end of the day, we should think what we have contributed to our institution.'

Brigadier Vinay Dhiman, deputy general officer commandant, Bihar and Jharkhand sub-area, and Poonam Thakur, the president of the IPS Wives Association, were also present. Brigadier Dhiman emphasised the importance of sports in personality development.
