Muzaffarpur, Jan. 9: A conman, who fraudulently withdrew Rs 1.5 lakh from another person’s account at State Bank of India’s (SBI) Mithanpura branch here, was arrested today when he tried his trick for the third time.
The accused, Alok Kumar of Amba village under Saraiya police station, had withdrawn Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000 from the account of the complainant, Ravi Ranjan Kumar, after flashing a photocopy of the latter’s passbook.
Today when Alok visited the bank and submitted a withdrawal slip of Rs 50,000 from Ravi’s account, the bank officials got alarmed and detained him.
Dev Prakash, the branch manager of the SBI, Mithanpura, called the police who then nabbed Alok and interrogated him. Based on the information provided by the accused, the police then conducted a raid at his house and recovered the entire amount withdrawn from Ravi’s account. Alok was later arrested.
The bank manager said Ravi had lodged a complaint with the bank last Saturday. In the complaint, he had said Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000 were withdrawn from his account illegally last Friday and Saturday. Prakash said the bank started an investigation into the case.
According to bank officials, Alok used to submit a copy of Ravi’s passbook to convince them that he was a genuine account holder. Ravi admitted that he had recently invested money in some financial institutions where he furnished photocopies of his passbook. “Alok may have got hold of the photocopies from one of the financial institutions, Ravi said.
